Website Optimization Themes and
Search Engine Placement

Sometimes referred to as website themes, optimization themes, search engine themes and more recently Topical Rank... theme based search engine technology, unlike page by page indexing, is based on reading an entire web site as one single document.

Theme based search engines determine a websites "themes" by indexing the entire site as a whole. When new pages are added, the search engine goes back to its database, pulls out all pages from that domain and indexes the entire set of pages as one.

Search Engine Themes
Optimization of Tomorrow.... Today!

In the past, search engines indexed and ranked individual web pages, not websites, but that all changed back in mid to late 2001 when Google, Inktomi, AltaVista, Excite, and Fast, began using themes in their algorithms. In turn, that means any partnered search sites using their search results, such as AOL Search, HotBot, and MSN Search, were therefore also using themes... and it's been like that ever since.

A page-based search engine spider looks at each individual page of a Web site when indexing. As a result, you could conceivably have hundreds of pages listed individually in a search engine's database, all of them optimized for different keywords. Themes-based spiders also look at the individual pages of a website, but then combine the results and analyze the site in its entirety.

As themes-based spiders grow in importance, it may become more difficult to optimize individual pages for widely differing topics. It's important to keep themes-based spidering in mind as you create new websites and redesign your existing ones.

Why Search Engine Themes

In the past, its been difficult at times to really know what a website was all about without going there and actually browsing all the pages or maybe reading the accompanying site description along side a listing in a human edited directory like DMOZ. This is because until the search engines began catagorizing entire websites it was only individual, separate web pages that were indexed and ranked. This of course was done without any consideration of the sites main purpose or theme.

Then there is the abuses and other related factors, not the least of which is search engine spamming in its many forms. It is precisely because of these abuses that the page by page ranking methods used by the search engines of the past have often resulted in less than desirable search results.

It's simple really, with the wealth of information that is available online today and the level of sophistication today's Internet user has evolved to, people are no longer willing to tolerate search results that only identify one page of relevant content. Today's web searcher expects a query to return links to entire websites that are chalk full of pages containing content, information and more links to more sites relevant to the original query.

Themes-based search algorithms represent today's search engine companies latest attempt to deliver high-quality, relevant results to their searchers. Fortunately, the change to themes-based indexing has been happening relatively slowly, which is giving webmasters a chance to measure the impact on their ranking and modify their sites accordingly.
