Theme Based Search Engines and Website Design
When a theme based search engine spider crawls your web site, it
reads it in the following manner...
- Domain Name - CountDowntoArmageddon.com
- Sub Directories - Iraq War, Prophesy, Earth Changes, Survival
- Page Titles - learn more about page
titles and optimization
- Meta Tag Data - learn more about meta
tags and optimization
- Headings. <H1> <H2> - learn more about header
text and optimization
- Outgoing Links - anchor text, attributes and surrounding text
- ALT and Title Attributes - learn more about alt
and title attributes and seo
- Named Anchors
- Body Content
Once the text is all taken in, the search engine spider does the
following...
- Delete all filler words - and, or, the, web
- Identify recurring keywords - words recurring throughout the
site
- Stem keywords - survival becomes survivor and surviving etc.
- Identify keyword phrases - survival becomes "survival
gear"
- Weight the keywords using common indexing methods - page titles
and header text are given more weight than body text etc.
- Establish the web site theme based on the dominance of keyword
and keyword phrases.
Hmmm... sounds simple enough, just keep every area of our web
pages keyword rich.
Well it isn't really that simple when you have a site as diverse
in the eyes of the spider as CountDowntoArmageddon.com or a worse
yet, a department store site. A search engine using theme based
technology gets confused because the website appears to be diluted
with unrelated information. It can't decide if the website is about
survival, the Iraq war, earth changes or prophecy. As a result,
the theme based search engine interprets CountDowntoArmageddon.com
as not a relevant choice for any of the above queries.
So... this is what you do.
Identify your Website Themes
Your Website or Search Engine Theme is simply what your web site
is really all about. Strip away any slightly off topic pages. Forget
about all the obscure, far reaching terms you may have considered
optimizing for in an effort to grab as much peripheral traffic as
possible. Now, ask yourself... "In as few a words and phrases
as possible, what is my website really all about?"
If your website is about several different things that a theme
based search engine is going to interpret as unrelated, then you
may want to consider dividing your site up into as many different
domains as you have themes.
In addition, it's always best to have each domain hosted on different
servers with different C block IP addresses, and then cross link
between the different sites any content that is related and on topic.

up your site into as many different separate domains as you have
themes by reading our tutorial on... The
Power of Cross-Linking.
Website Design for Theme Based Search Engines
- Select a keyword intense domain name - use hyphens.
- Name all sub-directories with keyword names - again, use hyphens.
- Include your most common keyword in most, if not al, of your
web page titles.
- Deliver consistent keyword meta tag data throughout the site.
- Use header text to deliver consistent theme information throughout
the site.
- Assign keyword relevant text links.
- Use ALT text on all graphic and graphics links.
- Use Title attributes on lists, forms, section headings, images
etc.
- Link out to authority sites which are relevant to your content.
- Riddle body text with keyword phrase intense information using
synonyms and stemming.
- Ask other on topic sites or hubs to link back to you with keyword
relevant links, attributes and descriptive text.
In order to create a good theme based website you must be consistent,
which is easy when building a site from scratch, not so easy for
some existing sites. For some, reorganization simply may not be
an option. But there is another way....
