There is nothing new about the Doorway Page, they have been used successfully for years to rank highly for specific keywords and keyword phrases. But as Theme Based Search Engine Technology continues to develop, we are going to be seeing a migration towards the use of Doorway Domains as a means to improve search engine ranking and placement.

Doorway Pages

For all practical purposes, mosts every page on a website is a "doorway page" by default. If the web pages of a site are effectively optimized for search engine placement then each acts as a doorway to the domain via a particular keyword query. That is exactly why search engine optimization is such an important aspect of your website promotion and marketing campaign.

It's also true that if you are a small business owner with 20 different products to sell, you are likely going to design a unique page for each different product you sell and then optimize those pages according, targeting specific keywords related to each of the products.

Now I know some of you out there will disagree, but this is not even close to spamming... at least not if its done appropriately. What it is, is making specific products and services easier for the potential customer to find, and it gives you the opportunity to provide your visitor with the information they need to make an informed decision to make the purchase.

A Doorway Domain is a website specifically created to rank highly in the search engines for one or two main keyword terms, all derivatives and closely related secondary keyword phrases.

Whether any one particular doorway domain is spam or not is difficult to say, but it's certainly easy enough to create a doorway domain that is totally on topic and of great value to your visitor. Always keep the end user in mind, providing unique content that is of value, and you can't go wrong.

Again, if you use CountDowntoArmageddon.com as an example, you could create a theme based doorway domain to provide unique information about all the survival products you sell c/w links to your shopping cart or product pages, while targeting just your most important keywords and terms.

This may seem like overkill to some, after all CountDowntoArmageddon.com already exists, but with hundreds of millions being spent each year in the USA alone on survival products, why settle for less than you can get in regards to search engine placement and ranking.

The more web pages representing a website in a search engine index, the greater the chances of generating pre-qualified traffic based on specific keyword phrase queries.

Even if you're selling just a handful of products, any web marketer worth his keep will recommend you feature each different one on a highly focused mini-site of its own. This will increase search engine exposure and bring you more traffic and potential sales. Your optimization will be highly targeted and focused domain wide, with all the web pages supporting your main keyword terms. The theme-based search engine will not be confused as to the purpose of your website and your targeted queries will not be diluted in the eyes of the spider.

The only drawback lies in the fact that while you may make a lot of one-item sales this way, getting customers to buy several products during a single visit isn't quite that easy without diluting your site's thematic focus again.

A doorway domain, unlike a doorway page, is a dedicated website that is highly focused, very targeted and immensely positionable within the market place. Doorway domains are doorway pages taken to the next level. Rather than adding some pages to an existing site for search engine optimization purposes, a new site is set aside to be optimized domain wide for a set of closely relatated keyword terms.

Doorway Domain... A domain used specifically to rank well in search engines for particular keywords, serving as an entry point through which visitors pass to the main domain.

Search engine spider food of the best kind, optimized to the last byte, doorway domains can achieve excellent rankings. They usually consist of several pages, each of which is optimized in a different manner, following a slightly different optimization method or algorithm. This way you can more effectively target all the important search engines simultaneously.

It's always important to provide high quality, unique content on every page, adding value and keeping the end user in mind at all times. Today's search engines are very good at identifying and weeding out duplicate content, and if you simply clone your pages with slightly different optimization or keywords you will likely be penalized.

Doorway Domains and Redirection

Traditionally, doorway domains have not been seen by the end user. Using redirection as a means to have your potential client forwarded to the corresponding page on your main site, your doorway domain page remained as mere food for the spiders. Simply put, the traditional doorway domain was nothing more than a "cloaked mini-site".

Now, althought there are technical means to redirect the visitor without redirecting the search engine, this is no longer a recommended method of achieving better search engine position. Cloaking of any kind is not without risks. Even if you have a legitimate reason for employing cloaking, it is recommended that you don't just in case your true intentions are misinterpreted by the spiders.

Today's Doorway Domain

Unlike "cloaked mini-sites" of the past, today's doorway domain is generally one of a network of mini-sites, each on its own C Block IP address, inter linked together via related, on topic contextual links within the visible content of the pages. All the mini-sites within the network share a similar look, feel and navigation so the visitor feels "at home" while navigating between related pages... yet each stands on its own theme in the eyes of the theme based search engine spider.
