SEO Tip:
Cross-Linking for Search Engine Position |
 |
The Power of Cross-Linking
Search engines score keywords in the hyperlink text (anchor text)
higher than those in the rest of the body area, and links containing
the keywords queried that link to your page from other domain names
help even more. That is why back links from other domains and Cross-Linking
is so important.
Cross-Linking Strategy for Search Engine Position
One search engine optimization strategy is to logically divide
your content across more than one domain name and then cross-link
the sites using keywords in each of the hyper-links. Purchasing
and setting up multiple domains can be a great way to increase your
visibility on the Web, and if you cross-link those domains appropriately
following a few simple rules, you can improve your Popularity Rating
or PR for all of them.
With today's search engines, it is in your best interest to host
each domain name with a separate hosting service so as to be sure
each domain name has its own IP address and is in a completely separate
IP address range. This is important as search engine algorithms
of today are tuned to spot neighborhood cross-linking, and cross-linking
between domains owned by the same company or person.
Some engines may even ignore link popularity completely if the
IP addresses of the sites are too close together numerically.
Also, make certain that each new domain has unique content of its
own to avoid spamming penalties.
Cross-Linking and Search Engine Themes
It's important to group your pages by "Theme"
as some search engines prefer to see a common theme to a Web site.
If they can establish one, then keywords falling into that theme
are more likely to be ranked higher.
You must also make sure that each domain has multiple pages on
it, preferably no fewer than five to ten pages, all with unique
content. Search engines like to see a website with content depth
and will often ignore sites with too few a pages.
Cross-Linking and File Names
If you can, create your page files with names that reflect the
main keywords being optimized for. This definately helps you to
score a little higher with those search engines that indexe the
page name portion of the link tag, but don't get carried away. Keep
your file names realistic in length and use hyphens. A good example
of a keyword loaded page file name for a web page being optimized
for Canon digita cameras would be "canon-digital-cameras.html".
Do the same thing with your image files as well.
Cross-Linking and Relevancy
Back links from a page on a separate domain that include your main
keywords in the Title Tag or Heading
Tag will improve your link popularity more with most modern
day search engines, such as Google,
more so than a back link from a page that doesn't share your main
keywords in the Title or Header Text.
This is called Relevancy, and it's becoming all too important when
it comes to search engine placement and website optimization. The
more relevant to one another, pages that cross-link are, the more
important to Popularity Rating that particular cross-link becomes.
Cross-Linking and Popularity Rating or PR
Remember, the more outbound links on a page, the less percentage
of its total Popularity Rating will be transferred to your page.
Obviously the PR transferred in the end will ultimately depend on
the PR of the page that back links to you, the number of out going
links it has, as well as its relevancy (see paragraph above).
The point is that in the case of Google for example, a page with
a PR of 8 c/w 40 outbound links is going to transfer less PR to
your page than a similar page with a PR 6 c/w just 3 outbound links.
Do the math, a PR 8 with 40 outbounds means it has a 40th of 8,
or a PR of 0.2 to share per link, while a PR 6 with 3 outbounds
has a third of 6, or a PR of 2.0 to share per links. Which page
would you prefer to have a back link from?
Cross-Linking and Anchor Text
Google looks for pages linking to your page that share your keywords,
not just in the Title and/or Header Tag, but in the hyperlink itself.
This is called anchor text, and the cross-link becomes of more importance
when it contains the keywords being queried.
So ideally, you want back links to your pages that share your keywords
in both the Title and Header Tags, as well as the Anchor Text. This
tells the search engine that the page is relevant. It's also important
that the descriptive content surrounding the anchor text be on topic
as well, containing relative keyword terms and phrases, as this
too will emphasis to the search engines that the link is in fact
on topic and relevant.

Google's PageRank formula works.
Cross-Linking Within a Domain
Although it is better if these links come from outside your domain
(preferable from a domain with high PR and not too many outbound
links), Google has been quoted as saying that even links from pages
within your domain can improve a page's Popularity Rating or link
popularity as it is commonly referred.
So, link as many pages from within your domain to the pages you
are optimizing for search engine position, then make sure that they
all get indexed... and always make sure you use your important keywords
within the anchor text, title and header tags to maximize your results!
It should be noted here that Google has stated that you require
at least one link to your Website from another domain name to ensure
indexing. Without at least a single incoming link from outside your
domain, your submission will likely be ignored and your site not
indexed.
