MSN Search
At the current time, MSN's
search engine does not supply any of its own results. In the
beginning of the internet and computer boom, MSN overlooked
the idea of a search engine, until now that is. Currently
MSN is working on their newest search ideas, code name "Longhorn".
Pending the release of this new technology they are developing,
MSN's Search receives its main results from Yahoo!,
its sponsored listings from Overture
and its directory results from DMOZ.
If, after a query is made and no results are found, MSN's
secondary search results come from Inktomi.
MSN Featured Sites
As stated above, MSN search engine receives its search results
from a variety of sources. The "Featured Sites"
section search results are provided by MSN's sponsors. The
results in the "Web Directory Topics" and "Web
Directory Sites" sections come from Overture,
one of MSN's primary provider. .
In some cases Overture does not have sufficient results,
so Inktomi "Web Pages"
results follow and thus your "free" indexed entries
may rank well. At the top of the "Web Directory Sites"
section, you can click on a link to view the 10 most popular
sites provided by Direct Hit (now Teoma).
The "Web Pages" section is provided by Inktomi.
Website Submission and MSN
Although you can submit directly to MSN, you would be better
off to directly submit to Overture
and Inktomi.
The top search results are generally in Overture sequence.
Since Overture is a PPC (pay-per-click) directory, if your
account balance falls to $0 your ranking in this section of
MSN will vanish. This means that the rankings in MSN are not
stable on a day-to-day basis and that you should consider
paying into the Overture program.
MSN
Add URL (via Inktomi)
To be considered for inclusion in the Inktomi
Search Index, powering the MSN Web Pages section:
-
Your site must be in English.
-
Your site cannot contain pornography,
pornographic or adult advertising, gratuitous or graphic
violence, material that infringes on or violates someone's
rights, or material that promotes/disseminates illegal
activities.
-
Your site cannot mirror or redirect to
another Web site.
There are no guarantees on acceptance or turnaround time
for these submissions.
MSN
Add URL (via Overture)
When you advertise in Overture
Premium Listings™, your business appears in the
search results on MSN, as well as other top U.S. search sites.
The thing to remember is that you must have suitable URL
content and be engineered to beat your competition within
MSN before you register your pages. Just registering with
MSN does not assure a suitable ranking.
