Excite Search Engine History

In December 2001, Excite went bankrupt and sold off the Excite portal property to InfoSpace, owner of DogPile metasearch, but apparently InfoSpace didn’t get the search engine or the search engine technology with the package.

Today, Excite is a MetaSearch engine receiving results from Overture, Inktomi, Fast, AskJeeves, Looksmart, About, and FindWhat -- just about anybody that is a PPC feed. It is not yet clear how relevance (results sequence) is determined, but it appears to be determined by the algorithms of the other search engines providing the results.
